So,today I went out looking for a new fragrance. In between assignments,I decided to cross the road from campus and wonder into Melbourne Central. I love men's colognes,I tend to mix them with a perfume oil,so I get a hint of femininity, but I usually pick the fruity ones as the aren't over powered by the heavy notes of sandal or cedar wood, although these are notes I like in a man.
That said,a lot of the one's I got to try (and they were a lot!),you could picture the man wearing them, but I like character in my fragrances as they give off personality...nothing worse than a man who smells just like every other man! I tried Marc Jacobs Men,and its actually not that bad,and could be unisex, but it had nothing extra that was inciting me to try it. if I met a man wearing it,I'd feel like they listened to the sales lady and asked what women liked.
The second one I tried, which I really tried to avoid, was Gucci by Gucci pour homme.
I'm in love with the ads (James Franco is in them) and the reviews have been outstanding and it smells fantastic. It really is for the sophisticated man. any woman would swoon if wearing this. I don't know if its the cypress, tobacco leaves or jasmine that make this a near perfect scent. I'd recommend it,but again, because of the publicity and hype,I've smelt it on people before, its nothing new.
I also tried Vera Wang for men. Save it for special occasions.
So,I was getting frustrated at this point and dissappointed that I was leaving empty handed. So I asked the sales lady for advice and she led me to my new favourite scent...
Armand Basi in Blue
It's by a spanish design house and I love european fragrances. They're not mass produced liek your Cool Waters and only the sophisticated, travelled and mature man will wear one of these. It's not everyone's cup of tea,but boy I tell ya,it's got character. you can tell a lot by what a man wears and this baby sings all the right notes for me. But I was looking for me...and it suits me well. I think the key in finding the right scent is to get something that fits your personality...and climate plays a huge part too. if you live in a hot climate, avoid woody scents, something light with notes like grapefruit and neroli or even bergamot.
And don't read reviews, everyone has there own opinion about what smells good. If you like over powering scents,go for it,just spray sparingly...Also,avoid the big label scents as most usually smell the same and are generally overpriced. A good fragrance is timeless, not something that you change season after season. Its like your signature,it describes you and what you like, your personality. Small European labels usually make great affordable and unique fragrances, you just need to know were to look. And skin chemistry, our bodies release heat and oils and so one fragrance may work well with one person and smell like cat's piss on another.
* Forgot to mention one of my faves...Tom Ford for men, farking pricey, but def worth it!
